Dwight Evans: Let’s honor those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice

By Dwight Evans.

For 148 years, our nation has set aside Memorial Day to honor the brave sacrifices of the American service members who have given their lives to defend democracy. And as we celebrate today, sometimes the sentiment in the holiday can get lost.

Some don’t fully understand the sacrifice made by the brave few who volunteer to serve in the armed forces — a sacrifice that preserves the freedom and blessings of this great nation.

I hope you’ll take a moment to join me in honoring the brave men and women who have paid the ultimate sacrifice to protect our country and have given their lives to defend our democracy.

No matter where or when their service took place, these patriots are a reflection of the diversity of backgrounds, creeds, and faiths, willing to defend the ideals that bind us as one nation — and we must never forget that.

Thank you.
