Washington, D.C. –In an effort to ensure that Hahnemann continues to keeps it doors open to serve those most in need, U.S. Sen. Bob Casey (D-Pa.), alongside U.S. Rep. Brendan Boyle (D-2nd Dist.), Dwight Evans (D-3rd Dist.) and Mary Gay Scanlon (D-5th Dist.), is calling on Hahnemann Hospital and St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children owner Joel Freedman to reverse course on the planned closure.
“The employees and patients of Hahnemann Hospital and St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children have put their faith and trust in you,” the members wrote. “In purchasing these hospitals, you made a commitment to these people and to the city of Philadelphia. We ask that you honor that commitment by exploring all options to protect these important institutions, and do everything you can to reach an agreement that will keep them open.”
Hahnemann Hospital, which employs over 2,700 of the city’s physicians, residents, nurses and administrators, announced impending layoffs in April of this year.
Hahnemann is a lower cost provider, and its emergency department provided care to over 55,000 patients in the last year.
